The Indian Institute of Technology is now speculated to provide 10% additional seats in IIT to foreign students. The IIT will now hold their entrance exams at 6 international centres as opposed to 1. By doing so, they are widening the enrollment section for foreign students. An official told ToI that the foreign candidates would have to first pass the JEE advanced examination to qualify for an IIT seat. The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in engineering) exam, which is a necessity for entrance into MTech courses is also to be held in 6 countries. He further said that the foreign candidates did not have to sit for the JEE main examination.

He also cleared the confusion over what it would mean for the Indian students and said that the induction of foreign students would not provide the Indian students with fewer seats. The 10% addition, is an addition to the already existing number of seats available in all of the 23 IITs. He also said that 20,000 more candidates would be made eligible to write the paper after passing the JEE main, and thus getting the number to 2,20,000.
In another very important change by the IIT, the cut-off aggregate marks in Class XII for the SC and SC candidates has been reduced to 65% from 70% in the JEE advanced exams 2017. A senior official told the reporters that a lot of interactive features have been introduced to make the process of registration, payment of fees, the announcement of results etc less tiring and complex. He informed that certain features such as video tutorials and SMS services are being planned to be extensively used to help the candidates. He said that beginning next year, latecomers in matters of registration for the IIT-JEE advanced exam are to be charged an extra fee of Rs 500.

The registration fees have also been increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,200 for the reserved category students, whereas it has become Rs 2,400 instead of Rs, 2000. The official also said that SAARC countries’ students would have to pay $135, whereas students from other countries would have to pay $270.
Talking about students with special needs, he said that students who apply under the PWD category with dyslexia must submit a certificate from a specialised in psychiatry and associated with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) or Dyslexia Associations.
