JEE Advanced 2014 Analysis by Resonance

The JEE Advanced 2014 was conducted on May 25, 2014. About 1.5 lakh Engineering aspirants appeared for Joint Entrance Exam JEE Advanced 2014  for admission to prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and ISM Dhanbad.

Here JEE Advanced 2014 Analysis by Resonance

On the paper pattern...
Resonance: This year the paper – I of JEE Advanced 2014 consisted of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) with more than one correct choice and Single Integer Questions. Both these varieties are of difficult standard for students. There was no negative marking in paper-I. Paper –II consisted of Single Choice Questions (SCQ), comprehension based questions and match the column type of Questions, which are relatively easy for students. In paper-II, there was negative marking in each question. Overall variety of questions was same as last year’s JEE Advanced paper.

On difficulty level of JEE Advanced…
Resonance: This year the overall level of the paper was tougher than last year’s.

In paper-I, Physics was tough due to lengthy calculations as each question required verification of each and every option. In Paper-II of Physics the difficulty level of questions was easier than paper –I but due to negative marking in each question it will be difficult to score in Physics paper-II.
In Chemistry, too, the paper was tougher than last year and due close options in MCQ it will be very difficult for a student to gather marks, again it would be beneficial foe a student if he had attempted Integer Answer Question first rather than going for MCQ in the beginning. In paper-II of Chemistry Organic and Inorganic portion was tough which made Chemistry paper tougher than last year’s.
In Mathematics, the paper was easier than last year and in paper-I, most of the questions were from calculus portion, which made it slightly easier for students. Paper-II of mathematics was very tough.

On was the ratio of questions from 11th and 12th
Resonance: In Physics paper-I, 11 questions were there from XIth NCERT syllabus and 9 questions were from XIIth NCERT syllabus, while in Paper-II, 9 questions were from XIth syllabus and 11 questions were from XIIth syllabus, so in Physics overall weightage for XIth and XIIth syllabus was equal.
In Chemistry, in Paper-I, 9 questions were from XIth syllabus and 11 questions were from XIIth syllabus and paper-II only 6 questions were from XIth syllabus and 14 questions were from XIIth syllabus so overall in Chemistry XIIth portion carried more weightage.
In Mathematics, Paper-I consisted of 15 questions from 12th syllabus and only 5 from XIth while paper-II was balanced.

On different sections of JEE Advanced 2014…
Paper-I of JEE Advanced 2014 was tougher mainly due to 10 MCQ questions in each subject, The remaining questions in each subject were Integer Answer Type which, too, was very difficult for students. Due to this mix of questions Paper-I of each subject was difficult.
Paper-II consisting of SCQ and comprehension based questions were relatively easier. Match the Column questions were also much easier than multiple matching questions. So, paper –II was easier but it carried negative marking so students had to be selective to score high.

On Subject wise difficulty level
Resonance: Overall difficulty level of the exam was higher than previous year’s exams and the expected cutoff is going to be lower than last year’s cut-off marks. Physics was the toughest of all the subjects while Chemistry was average . However, second paper of Mathematics was difficult. Overall, all three subjects were of almost similar difficulty level.

On questions covered in topics…
Resonance: In Physics, both 11th and 12th topics were given equal weightage but questions from some of the topics were missing like Nuclear physics, Elasticity and viscosity, Electromagnetic induction, Thermal expansion, SHM and some topics carried more weightage like Current Electricity, Geometrical Optics, Mechanics.
In Chemistry, 12th syllabus was given more weightage ; specially organic portion was tough and carried more marks. Similarly, inorganic portion was also of more marks than expected and Physical potion was tough.
In Mathematics, too 12th portion was given more importance and specially calculus part.

On expected cutoff in JEE Advanced 2014…
Resonance: The expected cutoff should be around 40% for general category, though any student scoring more than 35% in general category will be eligible for counselling. In OBC category, the cutoff should be around 32% and in SC/ST category it should be around 20%.

On special highlights of JEE Advanced 2014…
Resonance: JEE Advanced 2014 paper was tough and this highlights the level of competition which is increasing day by day. The paper shows that simple 12th standard study cannot make you successful in IIT exams.
