Gujarat may come up with new entrance test for professional courses
Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GujCET) doing away with Joint Entrance
Test (JEE) which is compulsory for candidates for admissions in
engineering and pharmacy.
According to a report published in The Times of India, the new process is being mulled after state education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama received representations from students and school management to make JEE not compulsory for the admissions in these courses. The report also mentioned that this year the state had given admission to students who have not taken the JEE test.
Moreover, the government is also considering the opinion of various stakeholders including academicians and students.
There are many students who had to go out of the state to take up higher education. It may come up as a big relief to more than one lakh students in the state. However, students who are seeking admissions to the institutes outside the state will have to take JEE or other national level tests.
The GujCeT is likely to be based on Semester 3 and Semester 4 of class 12 of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board.
Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel has asked education department to do the needful so that students who are willing to stay in the state don't have to compulsorily take the JEE test.
Some other states like Tamil Nadu gives admission to students on the basis of class 12 board exams.
