JEE (Advanced) 2014: Study tips to help you ace the exam

As the first stage of the Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Mains) 2014, comes to an end, it is time for engineering aspirants to brace themselves for the second round - JEE (Advanced) 2014.
Students who qualify the JEE (Main) exam are eligible to apply for the JEE (Advanced) starting from May 4. The registrations for the same will continue till May 9.

While there is still over a month for the JEE (Advanced) to begin, it is prudent to step-up your exam preparations a notch in order to ace the exam. So, here are a few tips for JEE aspirants to help them sail their boat ashore!

But before that let us have a look at the exam paper pattern and syllabus.

Paper Pattern:
The exam consists of two objective type (MCQ) question papers, designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates. Both the papers will be held for a duration of three hours and are made of three separate sections on Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
Candidates can answer the questions in English or Hindi. Negative making is applicable for every wrong
answer.

Syllabus:
About 45 per cent of the JEE question paper is made of questions from the class 11 syllabus, whereas the remaining 55 per cent is made of questions from the class 12 syllabus.

Helpful Tips:
  • Each subject is equally important hence the students should equal time to each. Students should focus on the class 12 board exam topics and follow it up by revising the class 11 topics.
  • Once the student is completely through with the exam syllabus, he/she can start solving mock test papers. These tests not only check the level of preparation of the individual, but also make them aware about their command over the subject, speed of solving questions and help them single out the weak areas to focus on.
  • The students should stick to one source and not to refer to multitude of books/ study material available in the market.
  • Students should avoid selective study as the questions in the paper are based on intermingling of concepts from various topics.
  • The students should always start from the basics and build on the important concepts.
  • While solving the sample question papers students should avoid leaving the question in between. Solving these questions will help them see how close they were to the answer and work on the right area.
  • The students should never cram. Instead, they should try and understand the problem or theory.
  • The students should avoid over-stressing themselves by going beyond the syllabus and learning extra topics.
Strategy for attempting questions:
  • Positive attitude and harnessing the examination temperament built during preparation
  • Read and follow all the instructions given in the question-papers very carefully
  • Plan your time, keeping an extra time in hand for revision
  • Prioritize after a quick glance and start answering with the question you know best and move progressively to the ones you find difficult after attempting the complete paper.
  • You must attempt questions carrying no negative marks
  • Don't be nervous if you find the paper tough since it is the relative performance that counts. Hence, put your best foot forward and take on the questions with a calm mind.
