UGC nod for CBSE's 13 vocational courses

There is good news for CBSE students who have opted for vocational courses in std XI and XII, as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has given nod to 13 such courses. Recognition by UGC of these courses is a big victory for CBSE, as now universities will try to introduce these at the undergraduate level.

UGC's deputy secretary, Shakeel Ahmad has written to all affiliated universities in the country asking that CBSE's initiative be encouraged and courses be introduced at the undergraduate level. Ahmad wrote to the universities asking, "it is imperative that these subjects find a reflection in the subjects already being offered at the graduate level in various educational institutes. It is important that appropriate consideration may be accorded while admitting students to the undergraduate courses at the college/university level. Accordingly, all universities are requested to take appropriate action for recognition of these new subjects for the purpose of admission of students in degree programmes".

UGC comes up with new regulations

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has passed new regulations related to technical education and distance education.
At a meeting of the commission, as per the newly passed regulations, technical colleges will now be regulated by the Universities.
According to the new regulation, the universities have been empowered to grant recognition and approval to the colleges that offer engineering programs leading to an award of a degree.
As per the sources, before granting the approval, the universities need to develop their own mechanism for screening of proposal and inspection of Institution. The sources, however, added that the institutes that are offering a diploma in management programs will continue to be regulated as per the existing practices.
