NEW DELHI: In order to make practicals even more hands-on and state-of-the-art, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is modernizing science and mathematics laboratories
in its schools at Rs 110 crore. The project deadline is 2015. The first
phase will cover laboratories of 250 schools by June 2014. KVS
is also planning to set up language laboratories and introduce French
and Chinese from this year. All laboratories across 1,100 Kendriya
Vidyalayas will be modernized by 2015. Speaking to TOI, KVS
commissioner Avinash Dikshit said modernizing of school laboratories
will be one of the major activities of the Sangathan this financial
year. "The target is to cover 250 schools spread across the region by
June 2014," he said.
The organization has identified physics, chemistry and biology laboratories for classes XI and XII and science laboratories for classes IX and X. Junior science and math laboratories will also be revamped. "The way experiments are done have changed a lot. Instead of the pin method for law of reflection of light, these days we get some good laser equipments. There are kits available which have all CBSE curriculum experiments. We also want to have science labs where all teaching aids will be stored. The idea is to make the practicals more interesting and contemporary," Dikshit said. Each school will be granted a sum of Rs 10 lakh for modernization of laboratories. The labs will get advanced kits developed by National Council of Educational, Research and Training, CBSE and other agencies. The labs will also be equipped with internet so students can access online laboratories. KVS also plan to set up language labs. At present, KVs offer Hindi, English and Sanskrit but if students want to take up study of a vernacular and their strength is more than 15 the school will offer that language. German language is taught in 400 schools. "We are going to offer French and Chinese from the 2014-15 session," Dikshit said. "Chinese will be offered in five schools," he added.
