Within the first five days of the placement season, IIT Madras has over 524 students placed in the campus recruitment that began on Monday. A total of 119 companies have made 577 offers so far in various categories. The institute has seen a significant increase this year in the number of students placed and the number of offers made as compared to last year.
Looking to the last year's records, in 2013, 84 companies had made 383 offers and 333 students were placed during the same period. Though the number of companies has increased by 35 this year but the ratio of the number of students placed versus the offers made remains almost the same.
The recruitment process is a culmination of month-long preparation for interviews, group discussions and online tests by the students. Aditya Bharadwaj who is doing an undergraduate dual degree programme, said that he had started preparing a month ago for the same.
"Some companies expect us to solve cases. We do a lot of probability optimization. We have a lot of courses aligned to consulting. I practice cases with others who are also appearing for similar profiles," said B.S.V. Saket from Visakhapatnam who has been offered a job in Goldman Sachs, Bangalore, as quoted in a national daily.

Female IIT-B grad in top 3 recruits with Rs 1.4 crore Facebook offer

Female IIT-B grad in top 3 recruits with Rs 1.4 crore Facebook offer
Technology companies dominated the first two days of placements at IIT-Madras.

MUMBAI: One of the three students who bagged the highest package of Rs 1.42 crore each offered by Facebook at the premier IIT-B on the first day of the placement season is a woman. In fact, two of the five students hired by the social networking giant this year from the campus, including those hired during the pre-placement process, are women. At Kharagpur, too, a woman is among the three IITians who got the top deals.

Most students who bagged premium packages this year are into coding. Students from the computer science department usually bag the top offers; however, the number of women in this department are always less.

"This is the main reason why fewer women manage to get the top deal. This year, there are only five women in the batch and most of us have managed to get a good deal," said Deepali Adlakha, who got a position in San Francisco. "I did a lot of coding in the last few months which helped me bag the offer of my choice," she added.

Shree Meghana Thotakuri, who bagged an offer from Google, will also get a base package of Rs 65 lakh, similar to that of Facebook, besides a joining bonus and other benefits.

However, the variable component of the latter is higher than the rest of the leading firms, said a placement co-ordinator at IIT-B.

Facebook tops IIT placements with Rs 1.4cr package, Visa lead hirer at IIT-B

At IIT-B, along with Adlakha, Ved Ratn Dixit and Rohan Das got the highest offers, also from Facebook. Two others, Aastha Agarwal and Rahul Singhal, got the same package, but as pre-placement offers. The firm offered the highest package of Rs 1.42 crore this year at the IITs, of which over 50% is one-time incentive and stock benefits (variable component). However, the base pay for most coding profiles offered by leading firms was almost the same for international positions - Rs 65 lakh. Visa Inc took around 28 students from IIT-B, the highest. Goldman Sachs hired 11 students from the campus.

Dixit, who also got the Facebook offer, is placed in California. "The highest offer does not mean much as we go by the base salary offered. It is more important for me to get into a company that I always wanted to work with." The leading firms which hired from IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Delhi were similar to those at IIT-B. At IIT-Delhi, two students were hired by Facebook. Samsung Korea offered the second highest overall package (Rs 93 lakh).

More offers poured in on the first two days of placements at IITs this year, compared to last year. At IIT-Madras, the numbers went up from last year's 95 on day one to 158 this year, claimed placement co-ordinator Babu Vishwanathan. The highest offer made at Madras was around Rs 80 lakh. Facebook did not visit IIT-Madras campus this year.

Punj Rajan from IIT-Kharagpur said the placements this year looked very promising even as 350 companies registered, much higher than last year. At IIT-Roorkee, four students bagged international offers, from Google, Oracle and Microsoft, claimed co-ordinator Kunal Punjabi. "Software companies have gone up and some start-ups which did not come to the campus last year are also hiring from our campus," he added.

At IIT-B, the number of day one offers went up from 182 to 215 this year, including pre-placement offers. By the end of the second day, the number of offers made by close to 70 companies was estimated to be around 350. On day two, Oracle, Amazon, Cisco, Samsung India, Yahoo Japan, were some of the companies which visited the campus. Most of the e-commerce firms and start-ups are lined up on Wednesday. The third day will also see more core engineering firms visiting the campus, said placement co-ordinator Mohak Mehta.

NCERT history textbooks do not need any changes: HRD Minister

No changes to be made in NCERT books
On Wednesday the government dismissed the idea to change NCERT textbooks, particularly on history. The human resource development ministry informed the Lok Sabha that there is no proposal to study the history textbooks for taking "corrective measures".
The ministry said, "Aryan culture and Vedic age are adequately reflected in the syllabus and textbooks taught in CBSE-affiliated schools" as quoted in a national daily.
Upendra Kushwaha, minister of state for HRD, in a written reply said, "The textbooks of history of class VI, published by NCERT, in chapter 5 and chapter 6 reflect Aryan culture and Vedic age suiting the age group." He also said CBSE is offering an elective course called "Knowledge Traditions and Practices of India" since 2012-13 in classes XI-XII, as quoted by a national daily.  Kushwaha said the course is based on the intellectual achievements of Indian thought that are found across several fields of study in ancient Indian texts ranging from the Vedas and the Upanishads to a whole range of scriptural, philosophical, scientific, technical and artistic sources.

Questions on 'swachh abhiyan' and Mars mission in CBSE open-book test.

AJMER: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cleanliness drive and India's Mars mission top the agenda for Class IX students in the Open Text-Based Assessment (OTBA) of the Central Board of Secondary Education scheduled for April 2015. Carrying 10 marks the test will be included in all five subjects of Class IX.
The OBTA was started last year in both Class IX and XI.

The CBSE has recently released the subject study material to schools and asked students to prepare and research the given topics. Teachers have been instructed to discuss these topics in classrooms so that students can evaluate and analyze them. "The test is to check the high order thinking skills of a student," said a teacher.

In Class IX, the OTBA will be in English, Hindi, Mathematics, Science and Social Science but in Class XI, the OTBA will be in Economics, Biology and Geography only. "We have sent the sample question papers and evaluation methodology to schools so that teachers can discuss them with students," said an official.

Cleanliness drive is among the OTBA topics in English and Hindi subjects. Students are required to spell out its importance, evaluate its merits and offer arguments on it. "This topic is included in both English and Hindi while last year the topic was child labour and condition of children in India compared to different countries of the world," said a teacher.

The Mars mission topic, also in English and Hindi subjects requires students to collect material on ISRO's Mars mission in terms of technological advancement. "The topic is same in English as well as in Hindi and the main aspect of it is to know the advancement in space technology," added another teacher. Other topics in these language papers are environment in English and health education in Hindi.

The OTBA topic in Science subject is again Mars mission but here the topic is related to physics and development in astronomy. The other topic is environment in which problems related to ecology are given to students. In Mathematics, the topic is Athithi Devo Bhava (A guest is equivalent to God), in which the number of foreign tourists is given and students have to calculate the mean and mode related to the economy. "The figures were given up to 2011 and the study material highlights the increasing arrival of foreign tourists. The material states that in Rajasthan, foreign tourists are attracted to Jaipur and Udaipur though there is no mention of Pushkar or Ajmer," said a teacher.

Further, in Social Science, the topic included this year is poverty and its challenges.

In Class XI, Economics, the topic is present challenges, in Geography it is weather and in Biology diversity of living organism is included as a topic. The OTBA will be conducted with the main papers in Class XI in the final examination and in Class IX it will be conducted with the second formative assessment and will carry 10 marks which will be included with the marks of the main subject.
