UGC nod for CBSE's 13 vocational courses

There is good news for CBSE students who have opted for vocational courses in std XI and XII, as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has given nod to 13 such courses. Recognition by UGC of these courses is a big victory for CBSE, as now universities will try to introduce these at the undergraduate level.

UGC's deputy secretary, Shakeel Ahmad has written to all affiliated universities in the country asking that CBSE's initiative be encouraged and courses be introduced at the undergraduate level. Ahmad wrote to the universities asking, "it is imperative that these subjects find a reflection in the subjects already being offered at the graduate level in various educational institutes. It is important that appropriate consideration may be accorded while admitting students to the undergraduate courses at the college/university level. Accordingly, all universities are requested to take appropriate action for recognition of these new subjects for the purpose of admission of students in degree programmes".

The board's academic director Sadhana Parashar had earlier written to UGC regarding these vocational courses. Parashar urged UGC that "vertical mobility for these innovative subjects needs to be provided for. It is essential that these subjects should be considered properly while admitting them to the undergraduate courses at the college/ university level. The syllabus of all these subjects is available on the website. The scheme of studies for all these academic subjects is rigorous in nature and designed specially with the industry and employability avenues in mind. This may be brought to the notice of all concerned units of your esteemed organization, so that students face no difficulty when they pass out of std XII. The information prospectus of your organization may accommodate the names of these new academic subjects, so that the students may be treated as eligible for admission to higher education as per their preferences".

TOI was the first to report in September 2012 itself that CBSE was pursuing UGC to get nod for their subjects. The board met with various universities and the central government on September 28 that year. They discussed the issue of shortage of trained professionals and the necessity for development of employability skills among students.

Its Vocational Education Cell (VEC), which is taking the lead in this, has been mandated to "recognize the importance of increasing and diversifying the skill-building industry in the country". The central board is currently offering 34 vocational courses consisting of 97 subjects. Since this is optional, so far only 313 affiliated schools in India and 11 schools abroad have opted for it.
